Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal neuralgia is a facial pain disorder involving the trigeminal nerve and often causes sudden, severe, electric-shock-like episodes of pain.

Common Triggers

  • Touching the face

  • Chewing

  • Talking

  • Brushing the teeth

  • Exposure to wind

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based largely on the characteristic pain pattern and neurological evaluation. MRI may be used to investigate possible structural causes.

Treatment

Treatment often begins with medication. Procedures such as microvascular decompression or stereotactic radiosurgery may be considered when symptoms remain severe.
