Hemifacial spasm causes involuntary contractions of muscles on one side of the face, often because a blood vessel irritates the facial nerve.
Common Symptoms
Twitching around one eye
Facial muscle contractions
Spasms involving the cheek or mouth
Symptoms affecting one side of the face
Diagnosis
Neurological evaluation and MRI may be used to assess the facial nerve region and exclude other structural causes.
Treatment
Treatment may include botulinum toxin injections or microvascular decompression when vascular compression of the facial nerve is identified.
