Failed Back Syndrome

Failed back syndrome describes persistent or recurrent pain following spinal surgery.


Possible Causes

  • Persistent nerve compression

  • Scar tissue

  • Recurrent disc disease

  • Adjacent spinal degeneration

  • Spinal instability


Evaluation

Evaluation focuses on determining whether a persistent structural or neurological source of pain can be identified.


Treatment

Treatment may include rehabilitation, pain management, neuromodulation, medication, or revision surgery when a correctable problem is identified.
