Chiari Malformation

Chiari malformation occurs when part of the cerebellum extends downward through the opening at the base of the skull.


Common Symptoms

  • Headaches

  • Neck pain

  • Balance problems

  • Visual symptoms

  • Weakness or sensory changes


Diagnosis

MRI of the brain and cervical spine is typically used to assess the position of the cerebellum and surrounding neurological structures.


Treatment

Symptomatic Chiari malformation may require decompression surgery to create additional space around the brainstem and spinal cord.
