Arteriovenous Malformation

An arteriovenous malformation, or AVM, is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins that bypasses the normal capillary network.


Possible Symptoms

  • Headaches

  • Seizures

  • Weakness or numbness

  • Speech changes

  • Visual changes

  • Coordination difficulties


Diagnosis

MRI, magnetic resonance angiography, and cerebral angiography may be used to identify an AVM and evaluate its blood supply.


Treatment

Treatment may include microsurgery, endovascular embolization, stereotactic radiosurgery, observation, or a combination of approaches.
