A cerebral aneurysm develops when a weakened area in an artery of the brain enlarges or bulges. If an aneurysm ruptures, it can cause serious bleeding around the brain.
Common Symptoms
Sudden severe headache when rupture occurs
Visual changes
Pain around or behind the eye
Nausea or vomiting
Confusion or loss of consciousness
Diagnosis
CT angiography, MR angiography, and cerebral catheter angiography may be used to evaluate the location, size, and characteristics of an aneurysm.
Treatment
Management may include monitoring, microsurgical clipping, or endovascular procedures such as coiling depending on the aneurysm and its estimated risk of rupture.
