Acoustic neuroma, also called vestibular schwannoma, is a usually benign, slow-growing tumor that develops on the nerve connecting the inner ear to the brain.
Common Symptoms
Hearing loss, often affecting one ear
Tinnitus or ringing in the ear
Dizziness or balance problems
Facial numbness or weakness in larger tumors
Diagnosis
MRI is commonly used to identify an acoustic neuroma and assess its size and relationship to surrounding structures. Hearing tests may also be used.
Treatment
Treatment may include observation, stereotactic radiosurgery, or microsurgical removal depending on tumor size, growth, symptoms, age, and overall health.
